The Alde Feanen is a nature reserve forged by man and nature. Scandinavian glaciers deposited a layer of boulder clay during the last ice age. Later, rivers and rainwater remained on it. This created thick layers of peat on the flooded grasslands. With 4000 hectares, this wetland is now the largest contiguous nature reserve on the Frisian mainland.

 

NATURE AND RECREATION AREA

You can enjoy the area of water in National Park de Alde Feanen. This area is located in the heart of Friesland.

In the water sports village of Earnewâld, there is plenty to experience. Once a year, there is Skûtsjesilen on the lake, and there is an all-day party in the village. There are charming waterfront cafes, and you can take a ferry across to the visitor center. From there, you can follow fun hiking trails for the whole family. A boat trip is definitely not to be missed in this area.

 

What is there to discover?

The village of Earnewâld is located in the center of Alde Feanen National Park. In the village, you can make a crossing with the ferry ‘Hin en Wer’, a whole adventure for children. There are several guided boat tours. It is also possible to explore the area by canoe or sloop. If you are in Earnewâld, then a visit to the Skûtsjemuseum should not be missed. Skûtsjesilen is important for the village. Earnewâld has its own Skûtsje and participates in the championships with it. Once a year, there is a competition day on the lake. It is quite an experience! In Earnewâld, there is a boulevard along the harbor with terraces and a nice playground with a pirate ship. At Koaidyk, you can swim and sunbathe at the water playground and swimming beach. From the visitor center in ‘t Fryske Gea, there are fun walks for the whole family. Children can bring a fishing net and go exploring by themselves. For example, to the Pettebosk. In bad weather, the museum in the visitor center offers a solution.

Accessibility

National Park de Alde Feanen is easily accessible and is located near the highways towards Leeuwarden-Drachten and Drachten-Dokkum. A bus line goes to Earnewâld. Parking is free of charge.
