UNIQUE HEDGEROW LANDSCAPE

De Wouden is located in the National Landscape of the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden. This area lies between Dokkum and Drachten. The unique area of over 25,000 hectares differs greatly from other areas in Friesland. Namely, it is characterized by wooded banks and dike walls. These are rows of trees with blackberry bushes surrounding meadows. There are also 2 large recreational lakes, marshes, and nice dirt roads. You also come across pingoes from the Ice Age. The scenic landscape is maintained by the farmers and is therefore well intact. For all of Europe, this is unique! Because of the wooded banks and dikes, there is great natural value and biodiversity. The forests used to be very popular with the rich; they had country houses built. Because of this, you can still find many states and stinsen.

WHAT IS THERE TO EXPLORE?

The area is easy to explore by bike or on foot. But also on the water, with a canoe or sup, you get a good picture of the area. In several places it is possible to rent one; for example, in ‘t Bûtefjild. Want to go to the beach? That is also possible. There are 2 large lakes. De Leien and Burgumer Mar. The beaches are suitable for families with children.

You can also experience the famous fierljeppen, or ditch jumping, for yourself at the Fierljepmuseum. You can also visit the state and Stinsen. In Feankleaster and Tytsjerk, near the state, is a beautiful forest with surprising elements.

When you think of Friesland, you might not expect a vineyard. Nothing could be further from the truth. Centrally located in the area is Frysling. They produce delicious wine with their own grapes and provide tours. In the culinary field, de Wouden has much to offer. There are regular regional markets where local delicacies are for sale. The month of August is dedicated to the event Brommels. When the blackberries are ripe, farmers open up their fields, and you can pick blackberries for free!
